The 5-Star Books I'm Afraid To Re-Read

Hello,

Welcome to this week's Top Ten Tuesday prompt, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's prompt is "Books I’m Worried I Might Not Love as Much the Second Time Around" was honestly a lot more challenging than I imagine it would be. That's because I'm very good at re-reading my favorite books. Whenever, I need to reset a book slump or I'm seeking comfort, I will turn towards an old-favorite. So, I went through my Goodreads lists and checked to see if there were any 5-star reads I hadn't re-read, and I came across these 5 books. What do you know? I do indeed have books that I'm worried to re-read!

I first read On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta because a dear friend recommended it to me. I still have vivid memories reading this book because it was a visceral experience. I don't quite know why I haven't re-read it. Perhaps, subconsciously, I'm terrified of having my emotional wounds re-opened? A tad bit dramatic, no?

As a teenager, I became obsessed with The Winner's Curse trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. I remember being so invested in these books that I would wait up until midnight on release day to purchase the books. I rated every book highly and I remember being put through the wringer by the author. I don't know that I will ever re-read this series, but I am grateful for it.

The Deal by Elle Kennedy is an interesting addition in this list because while I originally loved this book, I'm not entirely sure that love would endure today? I say this because the last few books by this author have not worked at all for me. That includes some of the later books in the Off-Campus series, and the spinoff books. I think I've simply outgrown Elle Kennedy's writing style.

Then, we have The Kiss Quotient. Helen Hoang made me an instant fan with this book. I also really liked The Bride Test, but the last book, The Heart Principle, was not for me. I've always intended to go back to re-read The Kiss Quotient, but I never did. I think part of me is worried that I won't love it because I disliked The Heart Principle. I know it feels irrational to write it off based on my feeling of that one book. Maybe someday I'll summon the courage to re-read it. 🤞

Finally, I have a very recent 5-star read, Sangu Mandanna's The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. This book was close to perfection for me in terms of writing style, character development, and romance. While I'm including this in the list, I do think I'll eventually re-read it. Maybe before the next book releases? 😉

How about you? Do you have any books you are afraid to re-read?

  1. I also turned to previous loved books whenever I'm in a book slump or feeling a little meh.

  2. I feel about The Secret History by Donna Tartt as you describe feeling about Jellicoe Road. I'm afraid it might just be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  3. I rarely, if ever, reread books because I'm so tempted by new ones.

  4. Your reason for not rereading The Jellicoe Road sounds similar to my reason for not listening to certain Broadway musical soundtracks too often! I have to brace myself for the second act of Hamilton and the entire soundtrack of Jekyll & Hyde lol

  6. I really liked JELLICOE ROAD when I read it, but it's been so long now that I can't remember anything about it! I did keep my copy of it, so maybe I need to re-read it and see how it stands up :)

    Happy TTT!

  7. I also adored The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. While I think it would hold up all, I doubt I will reread it. Mainly because I don't tend to reread books.

  8. Great list! I'm also a comfort rereader, but I think we all have those fears that certain books just won't be as good the second time around, and then it'll drag down that first impression.

  9. I've read The Deal and The Kiss Quotient, but only once each. I can see myself rereading The Kiss Quotient someday, but probably not The Deal?? But who knows. 😃

  10. I've still not read The Kiss Quotient, but it has been on my list for ages! I'm not sure which books I'm afraid to read again. x
